Events at Stillwater

We have an exciting series of dinners this year combining our love of books, food and wine!

Join us for our first dinner of our three-part series with award winning broadcaster -

Jon Faine on Wednesday 13th July at 6:30pm

Jon Faine is a lawyer and award-winning broadcaster who hosted the agenda-setting morning broadcast for

ABC Radio in Melbourne for more than twenty years. Jon had practised for seven years in both commercial

litigation and as a legal aid/human rights advocate before joining the ABC to host The Law Report on Radio

National. He is a weekly columnist for The Sunday Age, has been nominated for three Walkley awards, and does countless conference presentations, panel moderations, guest lectures and public events. His best-selling travel book was published by ABC books. Jon is well known for his provocative and probing debate, quick wit and thought-provoking ideas. He lives in Melbourne.

Bianca Welsh (co-owner/restaurant manager and sometimes presenter) will interview Jon on his new book - Apollo & Thelma.

In Apollo and Thelma – the astonishing true story of Thelma and her brother Paul, legendary

strongman and circus star, ‘The Mighty Apollo’ – broadcaster and lawyer Jon Faine shares a yarn that

has enthralled him for forty years, taking him from Melbourne’s depression-era slums to the isolation

of the outback. Jon revisits the feats of The Mighty Apollo, a strongman of yesteryear, who sought the spotlight – and legend status – as the world’s strongest man. He was famous for pulling trams with his teeth, having an elephant stand on him, and being run over by cars. Thelma, an enigmatic, ruthless and rugged woman, settled at Top Springs in the remote reaches of the Northern Territory to become the pioneering female publican of the infamous ‘Wanda Inn'. She survived decades running solo one of the most remote pubs in the outback until suddenly dying, leaving behind a complicated estate. But this is far more than just a yarn about these two remarkable siblings. Spanning 40 years, Jon immerses himself in Apollo and Thelma's stories, and uncovers true tales that are compelling, confronting, and sometimes too sad to believe. Jon revisits his work with literary giant Frank Hardy and the Gurindji struggle for land rights and reconsiders his own story as well as our colonial past. Apollo & Thelma is a humorous and quintessentially Australian

story, beautifully told.

Ticket price includes snacks, main, dessert and Pipers Brook wines. Price is $125pp. Locally owned bookshop Petrachs will be on site to sell copies of his book on the evening.
